The First Private Island Resort in the Iconic Indian Ocean
In December 2002, COMO Hotels and Resorts unveiled its first private island resort in the Maldives: COMO Cocoa Island. This flagship property brought the brand’s signature vision of privacy and luxurious beachfront living to the Indian Ocean, setting a new standard for island retreats.
The Maldives is a true paradise for disconnection and relaxation. Comprising small islands and atolls, the region boasts turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, extraordinary marine and terrestrial biodiversity, and pristine white sand beaches—all offering an unmatched sense of serenity and escape.
COMO Cocoa Island
Locally known as Makunufushi, COMO Cocoa is located amidst the southern atolls of Malé. The island is just a 40-minute speedboat ride from Malé International Airport, offering convenient access to this tropical paradise.
The island’s natural beauty remains largely untouched, allowing guests to fully appreciate its pristine landscapes. Towering palm trees, sea grape plants, wild greenery, and vibrant hibiscus flowers create a serene atmosphere. Surrounding the resort is a house reef, which frames a crystal-clear lagoon teeming with marine life, including graceful rays and baby sharks.
The resort offers a true escape into nature’s splendour, combining luxury with an authentic connection to the Maldives’ breathtaking environment.
Accommodation
The design aesthetic of the resort is the work of Singaporean architect Cheong Yew Kuan, blending contemporary sophistication with indigenous influences. The style of COMO Cocoa is understated yet elegant, a seamless fusion of modern luxury and local Maldivian elements. Some of the villas are inspired by dhoni boats, which are traditional Maldivian fishing vessels.
In 2019, the resort underwent a renovation, adding private pools to the One-Bedroom Water Villas and larger Water Villas, as well as a spacious new Pilates Studio with a Cadillac Reformer machine. Other new additions include a two-level pool, a gym, a yoga centre, and a complete redesign of the interiors of each villa.
The resort offers a total of 33 villas, including:
Eight Dhoni Water Villas
Nine Dhoni Loft Water Villas
Ten Loft Water Villas
Four One-Bedroom Water Villas with a Pool
One newly added COMO Sunset Villa (One Bedroom)
One COMO Sunrise Villa (Two Bedrooms)
Each villa is designed to provide guests with the utmost privacy, comfort, and breathtaking views of the surrounding ocean.
To reach these accommodations, guests cross a wooden boardwalk that stretches over the water. The structures are crafted from New Zealand pine, with traditional Kajan thatched roofs. Natural materials continue indoors, where high ceilings with wooden beams and polished teak floors create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The connection between the interior and the exterior is completed by floor-to-ceiling windows, offering unmatched views of the lagoon and surrounding natural beauty.
